According to Webster’s Dictionary, plus-size, or plus-sized, means extra large. But what does it really, really mean? What are the connotations? Plus-sized men can shop in a store for “Big and Tall” men. That must be cool for a guy. “What kind of guy are you? I’m a big and tall kind of a guy.” For women? Not so much. “I’ll be right back. I’m going shopping in the plus-sized store.”
I have a fantasy about going shopping in a plus-sized store. In this store, there are endless wonders. It goes on and on and has nooks and crannies and under-the-cupboards and under-the-stairs and over-your-head spaces. And what is in this fabulous plus-sized store? Books.
I fantasize about a Plus-Sized Bookstore. I would name this store “The Plus-Sized Bookstore” because what you see is what you get. So what do you see? What can you get? Whatever your imagination can conjure.
Romance and tragedy and poetry.
A store filled with dreams and memories and childhood favorites.
What else can your body and soul wish for?
………..and in Quechua, Icelandic and Spanish.
and more plays and poetry and fiction and non-fiction. And up in the air you’ll find…..
A bookstore where everyone is welcome, every dream is possible. Where your favorite authors join with just-published and just-discovered ones, to wrap you in a cocoon of joy. Why?
Because that’s what “plus-sized” really means.
It’s a lovely dream. 🙂

Thank you for reading this and commenting. If I walked into a store like this I would never leave…..a little piece of plus-sized heaven.

I sort of collect antique books. I haven’t set out to do so, but I think they are so interesting. So if I’m at library sale or a garage/tag sale and I see books published eons ago, I usually buy them. A lot of my books were my parents and grandparents, too. But the childhood favorites were some of my childhood favorites. I couldn’t part with them. I like to think I’m eclectic, but I still end up reading detective and mysteries 90% of the time. Thanks, John!

Ohhhhh this is definitely a HEAVENLY place… I want to live in a little corner. I promise to not take up too much room!!! I love your take on this “plus size” phrase 🙂

Thank you! I’ve thought about this for ages. Have you ever seen the show Warehouse 13? It was on for 3 seasons here in the US and I watched it on Netflix. I always thought how cool it would be if that were a library. But with my additional twisty-turny spaces.

Great idea, but didn’t Amazon beat you to it?

Haha But that’s not a REAL bookstore.
