A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I started a weekly series about my favorite books by genre. I started with Saneteachers’ Weekly Genre Feature-Fantasy and thanks to being a knucklehead and very ADD, I never wrote another genre feature. So I guess more accurately, it should be Saneteachers’ Yearly Genre Feature.
I love listening to music almost as much as I love reading. So instead of a genre reading list, I’m going to share my top 5 favorite songs. Not by genre, because I have fairly eclectic tastes, but by how-much-I-like-them. Oh boy, now to narrow it down to 5.
Unlike most people, there are lots of songs/artists that haven’t stood the test of time with me. As a child and teenager, I had every album the Beatles made and my friends and I would count down the days until the next one came out. Now I have no interest in listening to any Beatles song. Blasphemy, I know. Plus I hate Elvis Presley. How un-American of me.
1. Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
2. I Can’t Find My Way Home – Blind Faith
3. Tears in Heaven – Eric Clapton
4. I’m So Glad – Cover by Cream Hmmmm……I’m sensing an Eric Clapton theme here
5. Rolling in the Deep – Adele
I will have to post another Top Favorite Song list because this is just a sampling of what I like. And ended up being heavy on the blues/rock genre. Peace out.
I just knew Adele would be in there. Awesome voice😀

Agreed. I think this is her best song by far. It just touches me more than her others. Plus I love the video. I had my students “study” her song Hello. I’ve now heard it so many times and seen the video so many times in a short time that I need a long break from it. Although I like it a lot.

I never much liked the Beatles myself. McCartney and Wings had better songs than the Beatles, in my opinion. But musical tastes change over time; I used to find Paul Simon un-listenable, but now I do like many of his songs.

That’s funny. I’m the opposite of Paul Simon. I should do a list of the songs/band/artists I don’t like lol. It probably wouldn’t be a popular post. I don’t like Paul McCarney and Wings either. But George Harrison I LOVE. When he was solo or teamed up with other musicians.

It probably wouldn’t be a popular post–but interesting. I usually keep my disinterest in the Beatles to myself, as people are still a bit fanatical about them. Not that I think they are terrible, but I never understood why they are often considered the best band ever.

At the time, I thought they were the best, or one of the best, groups ever. The only songs I still enjoy if I hear them again are the really old ones. Like Norwegian Wood.

I prefer Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, but agree, she has an awesome voice.

Now I have to listen to that again. I didn’t realize until I just thought about it, that they are all British bands.

I’m always interested in the different tastes people have in music and which songs or groups they gravitate towards.
I’d be hard pressed to come up with five, even if I did one in every genre. I’d remember another and have to do it over again..:)

That’s how I am with books, too. I have about 100 #1 favorite book lol. I was going to list 10 songs here, but wanted to add videos without making the post a mile long. As always, thank you for your comments 😃🎼

I smiled at your 1st Choice already! 😊😊😊 I don’t know #2…: (, and the rest are awesome selection! I don’t think I can narrow my song choices to 5 – that’s hard!!!

I can’t either. This is just the first Top 5 Songs post 😂There are a bunch more that are right up there. Thank you for checking them out. What are some of your favorites?

Let’s see…Pink Floyd Shine on you Crazy Diamond and The Wall are top of my head at the moment, also Supertramp’s Logical Song. I’m definitely a retro and alternative/indie/punk kid, I’d say those from Alphaville, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Duran Duran, Pearl Jam, Green Day (my all time favouritte!) …too many! LOL.

haha I totally understand. I have a playlist of 80’s and 90’s favorites to post, too. I don’t know Alphaville, but I really like Pearl Jam, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and Green Day. We both could go on and on. And then there is dance music, and jazz, and, and, and……

Some good ones on there! The only ‘favorite’ song I can think of right now for me is a country song. “Old Red”

That’s an old song, right?

2001 – Blake Shelton. “Old Red was the damnedest dog that you ever seen. A nose that could smell a three day trail..” etc.

Nope. Not the one I was thinking of. I’m not a country music fan. Except the really old songs, like from the 40’s. I find newer country to be too pop or rock. Does that make sense? I will check this song out, though.😉

It makes perfect sense. I have the same complaints. Old Red is very much older country sounding.
I stopped liking Country about the time Shania Twain appeared on the scene. Prefer Reba, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, etc.

Tastes in music change, like with everything else. Very many people have heaps of CDs they don’t like any more. I know I do! To reply to Berthold Gambrel, the early Beatles were great to dance and sing along to 🙂 I could never stand depressing “Yesterday”, and only really liked John Lennon’s voice.

I have always liked George Harrison the best, and think that once he was out on his own he really was awesome. I think that combined the Beatles were a phenomenon and their music changed everything. They just don’t affect me anymore. I completely agree about tastes changing for music as for books.

Very difficult to select a top twenty let alone a top 5! I’m with you on Zeppelin but prefer the heavier stuff of theirs, love “can’t find my way home”, love Cream but prefer the live version of I’m so glad (try the’Goodbye Cream’ album of their final gig.) Never got into Adele.
As for the Beatles and Elvis, I’ve never liked Elvis and as a young teen I adored the Beatles so much that I listende to them too much with the result that I couldn’t stand them for decades. I ‘rediscovered’ them in the last few years and quite like them again but couldn’t say they are favouites.
Currently I’m listening to Sarah McLachlan – especially ‘Possession’ and ‘Fumbling towards Ecstacy’, both of which I adore. https://youtu.be/IMTPrLNDgGc

Sarah McLachlan is okay. Some of her ballads I love but others don’t grab me. And Top 5 should really be “Top 5 of the first 200 that I like” lol. I have an interview coming up on my blog soon of a wonderful new talent….a young man who sings jazz and pop an is an accomplished lyricist and you name it. Stay tuned!

This is what I was doing a year ago. These are still my favorite songs, and I thought with the 2017 Eric Clapton Tour going on, this list is particularly relevant. I hope you enjoy the music. What are your Top 5 Favorite Songs?

You should do a top 5 depending on your mood. I listen to different music depending on how I feel at that moment.

Like the top 5 if I’m grumpy? Seriously, though you’re right. That would be a great idea.
