Yes, I did the books first. I was afraid the movies wouldn’t live up to the books but I love them too. I still think the books are better. Except the Rue scene.
I must admit I preferred the books to the films of Dances with Wolves and The Abyss, although we had extended versions of both and they went back to the book.

We have them on DVD. I tried reading the book after I’d seen the films, but found it a bit heavy going for me, probably because I knew the story.

I’m probably the only person in history who hasn’t seen, nor read, Dances with Wolves. But my husband says it’s great.

I definitely like the books better, but I think this series of movies tried to stick pretty close to the books.
